Creative Theatre
From imagination to performance
Wednesdays 19.15-20.15
Creative Theatre or Devising is a way to create theatre from stratch. We normally start with a task or exercise; or some kind of stimulus. This can be used to create characters, emotions, objectives and, of course, scenes.
It combines storytelling, devising, improvisation, and performance in a fun and collaborative environment. This course goes beyond traditional acting, allowing you to experiment with writing, directing, and creating your own performances. You’ll work as part of a team to develop original stories, design characters, and explore different elements of theatre, such as lighting and sound. It’s a chance to let your imagination run free and explore every aspect of the creative process. Whether you’re new to acting or an experienced performer, Devising is a space to express yourself and bring your ideas to life.
This is an amazing class. No class is the same, although we often develop ideas from previous sessions. We do ice-breakers and warm-ups like zip, zap, boing in a circle. Then we do activities related to that day’s theme: could be something from the news, an object a memory. We could focus on a text and draw inspiration from it. Often we do open scenes where an ambious dialogue and we have to give it form: decide who we are, what we mean, why we’re here, when we are and where we’re going. We perform our scenes to the class and at the end of the year, put on a whole show. If you want to do something a bit whacky and creative with a great international crowd, this is your bag!
